PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the super-lean burn, to widen a range of an operable air/ fuel ratio to improve the fuel consumption and to reduce the exhaust by enabling the stratified burining even by a flat piston in a cylinder injection engine. SOLUTION: In a cylinder fuel injection-type engine comprising an injector 1 for directly injecting the fuel into a combustion chamber 13 formed between a cylinder head and a piston and an ignition plug 2 mounted on the cylinder head, a swirl forming means for forming the air current of lateral swirl revolving around a cylinder axis in a combustion chamber 13 in the intake stroke in a lean-burn combustion mode with the distribution of the swirl strength in the cylinder axial direction satisfying that the swirl strength at the ignition plug 2 side is higher than that at the piston 6 side.
