Each link (39, 40) of the chain consists of a row of filter arms (30) which are mounted pivotably on two spindles, namely an upstream spindle (14) and a downstream spindle (13), which are staggered along the chain. Each filter arm has a front leading edge (33) and is continued by an upstream extension arm (35) having a leading edge (38). The extension arms (35) of a link (39) are interposed between the arms (30) of the adjacent upstream link (40) and are mounted pivotably on the downstream spindle (14) of the said adjacent link. The leading edge (38) of the extension arm (35) of each filter arm (30) forms substantially a rectilinear continuation of the leading edge (33) of the arms (30). The invention is used in the purification of industrial effluent.
