PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device enabled to surely detect generation of cataphoresis without receiving influence of disturbance from the outside. SOLUTION: An inverter circuit 1 impresses a direct current component superimposed high-frequency voltage to a discharge lamp La, and the discharge lamp La is lighted on high-frequency voltage. A cataphoresis is detected by making a physical volume reflecting a distribution of mercury inside the discharge lamp La, out of the lowering of lamp voltage of the discharge lamp La or the change of temperature difference between both end parts of the discharge lamp La.
