PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an eccentric optical system suitable for an image display such as an image display mounted on head, with which the user hardly fatigues because the system is extremely small and light-weighted and a clear observation with a wide angle is given. SOLUTION: The eccentric optical system is provided with a prism element 7 and so composed as that the prism element 7 has a first face 3, a second face 4, and a third face 5, the space formed between the first face 3 and the second face 4 and the space formed between the second face 4 and the third face 5 are filled with a medium, these faces are located as different faces of the prism 7, the first face 2 is formed having a light-transmissive face function, the second face 4 has a reflecting face function and is composed in a curved form of which concave face is directed to the medium of the prism, the third face 5 has a light-transmissive face function and is composed with a rotationally asymmetrical aspherical face form which has a function of compensation of a rotationally asymmetrical aberration, the second face 4 is located opposite to the first face 3 holding the medium between them, and the opposite side of the first face 3 seen from the second face 4 is exposed to the air.
