PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable camera having a layout by which the miniaturization of the camera is accomplished. SOLUTION: The camera is provided with a battery chamber 22 for storing a power supply battery for the camera, a cartridge chamber 16 arranged adjacent to the battery chamber, and equipped with a film cartridge loading/ unloading opening, and also, prepared for storing the film cartridge inside, a cover 20 which is made movable between an open position where the opening of the cartridge chamber is opened, and a closed position where the opening is closed, and a locking mechanism 80 for locking the cover when the cover is arranged in the closed position, and some of several members constituting the locking mechanism 80 are arranged in a space part 38 formed on the side of one end of the battery chamber and also beside the cartridge chamber due to a dimensional difference in an axial length direction between the battery chamber 22 and the cartridge chamber 16.
