PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for a position detection which is used suitably for laying a sewage pipe. SOLUTION: The position detection apparatus has a plurality of position detection units installed in respective points of measurement, each of which units has an optical device supported so as to be rotatable around an azimuth axis line and around an EL axis line, and is so constituted that optical axes of the optical devices in the position detection units installed in two adjacent points of measurement are aligned with each other to determine the distance between the two points on the basis of a rotation angle around the azimuth axis line and a rotation angle around the EL axis line of the optical devices, the azimuth of the two adjacent points of measurement.
