The gas burner, for a water heater, has a porous body (10) within a water-cooled combustion chamber. A gas/air mixture (GLh) is fed to the porous body, at the inflow side, with a high air count e.g.1.6. An additional gas/air mixture (GLz), with a lower air count e.g. 1.3 or a pure combustion gas, is fed to the porous body to at least one zone (10.1,10.2) away from the inflow side. The second gas mixture or pure gas is delivered by pipes (21) into the first of the zones (10.1), and then to the other downstream zones in succession. The combustion chamber (11) is an air-water heat exchanger.
