[Also in Divisions F1 and F2] An axial-flow pump (see Division F1) is driven by an electric motor having a rotor carried by a tube 17 through which water is pumped by an impeller 28 from an inlet 11a to an outlet 10a. The rotor and impeller assembly is supported in bushes 20, 27 which may be of phosphor bronze impregnated with graphite but preferably are of impregnated fibre which swells on contact with the water to provide the appropriate running clearance. A sleeve 9 sealed to the casing 10 by a sealing compound prevents water from reaching the stator laminations 13 provided with a field winding 14. The sleeve 9 may be of aluminium and may be 0.004 inches thick, and the casing 10 may be a metal die-casting or moulded from a synthetic resinous material. The rotor comprises a number of laminations 15 carrying copper conductors 16 which are flanged over at their ends and may be of helical form. The complete rotor is tinned to unite the ends of the conductors to the laminations and prevent the ingress of water. In a modification (not shown) the copper windings extend through ferrous tubes. Alternatively, the rotor may be die-cast or precision cast by the lost-wax method and may either have integral core holes for the conductors or have the conductors cast in position. To facilitate starting the stator may be adapted for rotation or at least angular movement, possibly through a gear system. A cowling 36 may be provided. |
