1,186,181. Antiviral substance. YISSUM RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CO. 3 April, 1967 [4 Jan., 1966], No. 345/66. Headings A5B and A5E. An antiviral material is obtained from virusinfected plants by treating an aqueous extract thereof to remove infective virus (e.g. by adsorption on hydrated calcium phosphate) and ballast materials (e.g. by adsorption on an anion exchange column) and elution with NaCl solution of increasing concentration (0.4 to 0.65 M). The eluate may be desalinated and chromatographed (e.g. on carboxymethyl cellulose) or re-adsorbed on an anion exchange column (e.g. of diethylamino ethyl cellulose) and re-eluted. The pure product is thought to be RNA, while the less pure product is thought to be RNA plus protein. It may be incorporated with conventional carriers into forms for administration to treat plant and animal virus infections.
