1,190,844. Filtering medium. BRUNSWICK CORP. 11 April, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 16628/67. Heading B1D. [Also in Divisions D1, E1 and H1] A metallic felt for use as a filter comprises staple metal fibres having a fracture free, unmachined and unburnished outer surface and a mean transverse diameter of less than 50 microns held by frictional engagement of the said surfaces. The pore sizes of the layers of a laminated filter may decrease progressively in the direction of fluid flow. Metal rods are supported in a matrix of e.g. monel metal to form a billet which is drawn till the filaments attain the required diameter. The fibres are then cut preferably while supported in the matrix or tensilely broken after removal of the matrix. The fibres, in the range ¢ to 6 inches, may be crimped. The fibres are then picked and carded, and after possible laminating and annealing are compacted or creped. |
