1,190,813. Rolling tubes. ROTARY PROFILES (JERSEY) Ltd. 5 May, 1967 [5 May, 1966; 17 Aug., 1966], No. 19014/67. Heading B3M. Apparatus for rolling a tubular workpiece includes a throat through which the workpiece passes, an annular series of rollers being positioned in the throat, with the axially outer parts of each roller rolling in line contact with a circular section backing member. A series of rings of rollers 14 may be used for tapering a tube, each roller either being freely mounted for limited movement of its axis in a groove of a housing 10, being mounted on a stub axle, being skewed relative to the tube axis, or being backed (Fig. 5) by a further roller. Further rollers may be positioned within the tube and supported by a mandrel. Internal rollers 50, Fig. 10, together with external rollers 40 or needle rollers 56 are used to size a tube drawn past the rollers. Plugs 52 and 53 of increasing size and provided with oil grooves 55, 57, serve to straighten the tube as rolling progresses. Internal (Fig. 11) or external (Fig. 12) sizing of a tube is performed by supporting the tube by a housing 6 or mandrel 82 and traversing the rollers 70 and 80 over the inner or outer tube surface. By suitably profiling the bore 66 or mandrel 82, splines may be produced on the tubes. |
