An atomizer for lubricants comprises a container for the lubricant and an atomizer head connected thereto, the head having a passage for the flow of a gaseous medium which mixes with the lubricant, a spring loaded valve means regulating the cross-sectional area of the passage, operative to permit the forward flow of the medium, and a separate back flow passage containing throttling means, by-passing the control valve means and being provided for the reverse flow of the gaseous medium. A suitable apparatus is shown in the Figure. When the medium flows through 4 in the direction of the arrow, the control valve 5 opens and this results in a pressure drop. This drop forces lubricant from the container 1 up the standpipe 11 and into the drip cowl 3 and finally to the inlet 10. The drops of lubricant issuing from 10 are thus sprayed. When the medium flows in reverse direction, valve 5 closes but check valve 19 opens and the medium flows into the container 1 via the port 18, and out via the port 9. A plate 21 deflects the medium away from the lubricant. A pressure drop is created which in this instance retains the lubricant in the container. |
