The invention comprises compounds of formula and their salts with pharmaceutically acceptable acids, wherein m and n are each 0, 1 or 2, m+n=1 or 2 and R is H, Me or Et. These compounds may be prepared by (a) reducing the corresponding precursors having doubly bonded oxygen attached to either or both of the alphacarbon atoms; (b) alkylating or reductively alkylating the compounds where R=H; (c) reducing the compounds where R=formyl or acetyl; (d) heating the corresponding aminoalkyl/bromoalkyl- or di-(aminoaklyl)adamantanes. Starting materials also exemplified are adamantanes substituted in the 2-position thus: 2- bromoethyl / bromomethyl; carboxy / 2-hydroxyethyl and its lactone; carboxy/2-carboxyethyl, its anhydride and the anhydride of carboxy / carboxymethyl; carbomethoxy/carboxy 2 - hydroxyethyl / hydroxymethyl and its cyclic ether; carboxy / 2 - N - methylcarbamylethyl; carboxy / 2 - cyanoethyl; carbethoxycyanomethylene; cyano / cyanomethyl; and 2-cyanoethyl/cyanomethyl. Pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions for oral, parenteral or rectal administration comprise compounds of the above formula which may be used for combatting or preventing virus infections. |
