1,159,521. Non-catalytic vapour phase oxidation of hydrocarbons and reactor therefor. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 16 Aug., 1966 [16 Aug., 1965], No. 36573/66. Heading C2C. A process for the oxidation of one or more aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms which comprises:- (a) introducing from about 0À01 to about 50% by volume of a feed comprising at least one of the hydrocarbons into a back-mixed reaction zone 11, together with from about 4 to about 14% by volume of oxygen based on the volume of the hydrocarbon, (b) reacting the hydrocarbon with the oxygen in the back-mixed reaction zone, at substantially isothermal reaction temperature ranging from about 425‹ C. to about 575‹ C. and a pressure of from about 20 p.s.i.g. to about 150 p.s.i.g., (c) introducing the effluent from the backmixed reaction zone into a tubular reaction zone 17 connected in series to and communicating freely with the back-mixed reaction zone. (d) introducing the remaining feed together with oxygen into the tubular reaction zone through a plurality of inlets disposed along the tubular reaction zone, (e) maintaining the same oxygen concentration of from about 4 to about 14% by volume based on the volume of the hydrocarbon feed through each inlet, (f) maintaining a dilution ratio of from about 5:1 to about 100:1 in the reaction zones, (g) effecting the oxidation of the hydrocarbon feed in the tubular reaction zone at substantially isothermal reaction temperature of from about 425‹ C. to about 575‹ C. and a pressure of from about 20 p.s.i.g. to about 150 p.s.i.g., (h) maintaining a mean contact time of the gases flowing through the reaction zones in the range of from about 0À07 to about 1À5 seconds, and (i) removing the effluent from the tubular reaction zone and recovering the olefin oxide produced in the reaction. Examples show the oxidation of mixtures of propane and propylene to produce propylene oxide, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde and acrolein. |
