A photographic material comprises a support carrying adjacent layers of two silver halide emulsions having different speeds, the faster emulsion being an ordinary Ag iodohalide emulsion in which at least 2 mole % of the silver halide is Ag 1, the slower emulsion having grains consisting of Ag 1 or Ag haloiodide cores covered by iodide-free silver halide shells, the speed difference between, and the characteristic curves of, the two layers being such that the total scale of said layers is greater than that of either emulsion layer alone. The adjacent layers may be contiguous or separated by a hydrophilic colloid layer. The material may have red-, green- and bluesensitive units for forming cyan, magenta and yellow dyes, at least one of the units comprising adjacent layers as defined above. |
