[Also in Division A5] The N-methyl-glucamine salt of coumermycin, having the formula wherein X<SP>1</SP> and Y<SP>1</SP> are each a 5-methyl-pyrroyl- (2) group, a pyrroyl-(2) group or a hydrogen atom, are prepared by reacting the free acid of coumermycin with two molar proportions of the amine in aqueous ethanol; the resulting solution of the salt is freeze-dried. The sodium salt of coumermycin is prepared in a similar manner, by addition of sodium hydroxide solution to an aqueous ethanolic coumermycin solution, the salt being isolated by freeze-drying. The salts are for use in pharmaceutical compositions (see Divisions A5-A6); the N-methyl glucamine may be admixed with the coumermycin or a salt thereof to render the antibiotic water-soluble, or the pre-formed N- methyl glucamine-antibiotic salt may be used. |
