Dichloroacetyl chloride is produced by oxidizing trichloroethylene in the liquid phase, in the presence of oxygen, and under the action of ultra-violet light and with the addition during the course of the reaction of 0À0005 to 0À05% by weight of an organic nitrogen base, the reaction being continued until there is present 98% by weight or more of dichloroacetyl chloride. The organic base, e.g. a secondary or tertiary amine such as dimethylamine, diethylamine, dibutylamine, trimethylamine, triethylamine, a tributylamine, N- methylaniline, N,N - dimethylaniline, pyridine, piperidine, a picoline or quinoline, may be added with or without interruption of the reaction. |
