[Also in Divisions C3 and G2] A surface, glass is exemplified, is coated with a solution of a light-sensitive, organic solvent-soluble film forming polymer prepared by the reaction of (a) a copolymer of maleic anhydride with an alkylvinyl ether, ethylene, styrene or vinylpyrrolidone, or polymers of ethylenically unsaturated carboxy acids, or esters or acid halides thereof with (b) an allyl compound of the general formula wherein R is H, C 1-3 alkyl, aryl, C 1-3 alkyl substituted aryl, halogen, carboxy, or sulfonic acid; R 1 is H, aryl, alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, substituted aryl or aryloxy, benzyloxy, fluoro, chloro, bromo, nitro, carboxy, sulphonic acid, furanyl, cycloalkyl, aliphatic carboacyl, aliphatic carboacyloxy, aroyl, aroyloxy, cyano, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, or carboalkoxy; R 2 is H, alkyl alkoxy, alkoxymethylene, aryl, aryloxy or alkyl substituted aryl or aryloxy; R 3 and R 4 are H, aryl, alkyl or alkoxy substituted aryl, chloro, bromo, nitro, amino, or alkyl sulfonyl. Such that when R and R 1 are H or alkyl, then at least one of R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is a substituent other than alkyl or H; and X is hydroxy, amino, monoalkylamino, monoalkenylamino, monoarylamine or mercapto, the resulting polymer consisting of 25-50 mole % of recurring structural units of the general formula wherein W is H, alkyl, aryl, chlorine, bromine; X1 is oxygen, sulfur, -N-R1 wherein R1 is H alkyl, alkenyl, or aryl, Y is and Z is H, alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, -COOM or CO-X1-Y wherein M is H, a metal ion, ammonium ion, substituted ammonium ion, alkyl or aryl and the remaining structural units of the polymer being the polymerised moiety from (a) above. Copper and zinc are also mentioned as substrates. The polymers (a) exemplified are copolymers of maleic anhydride with methylvinyl ether, N-butyl-vinyl ether, isobutyl vinyl ether, octadecylvinyl ether isooctylvinyl ether, dodecylvinyl ether, cetylvinyl ether, styrene, ethylene and N-vinylpyrrolidone and polymers of methyl acrylate, acrylic chloride and methacrylic chloride.
