[Also in Division C3] A coating composition for use in production of a synthetic leather comprises (a) a polymer of a glutamic acid-gammaester and (b) an amino acid having one of the formulae: wherein m is 1 to 18 n is 0 to 30 R, and R 5 are a C 1-20 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a C 4-20 cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group, a C 6-20 aromatic hydrocarbon group or one of these groups substituted by alkoxy, carboalkoxy, carboaralkoxy, carboaryloxy, carboalkaryloxy, alkylamino, acylamino, canboalkoxyamino, carboaralkoxyamino, cyano, nitro, fluoro, chloro or bromo, R 2 and R 3 are each a hydrocarbon group as specified for R 1 and R 5 or one of these groups substituted with hydroxy, alkoxy, carboalkoxy, carboaralkoxy, carboaryloxy, carboxy, alkylamino, acylamino, carboalkoxyamino, carboaralkoxyamino, cyano, nitro, fluoro, chloro, bromo or a sulphonic acid group, R, is hydroxy, a C 1-6 aliphatic hydrocarbon group or alkoxy group or one of these groups substituted by alkoxy, carboalkoxy, carboaralkoxy, carboaryloxy, amino, alkylamino, acylamino, carboalkoxyamino, carboaralkoxyamino, cyano, nitro, fluoro chloro or bromo, and R 6 is a C 2-20 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a C 4-14 cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group, a C 6-20 aromatic hydrocarbon group or one of these groups substituted by alkoxy, carboalkoxy, carboaralkoxy, carboaryloxy, carboalkaryloxy, alkylamino, acylamino, carboalkoxyamino, carboaralkoxyamino, cyano, nitro, fluoro, chloro or bromo. In examples polymers of glutamic acid esters specified are poly-gamma-methyl-L-glutamate, poly-gamma-butyl-L-glutamate, poly-gamma - benzyl-D-glutamate, a copolymer of gammamethyl-L-glutamate and gamma-n-butyl-L-glutamate, a copolymer of gamma-methyl-D-glutamate, gamma-methoxy-ethyl-D-glutamate and N-acetyl-lysine, a copolymer of -gammaethyl-L-glutamate, gamma-(n-propyl)-L-glutamate and L-alamine, poly-gamma-tertiary butyl -L-glutamate poly-gamma-ethyl-D-glutamate, and a polymer of O1, O2,-di (gamma-glutamyl) ethylene glycol. In Example 14 poly-L-alamine is also present. Amino-acids specified are dibutyl glutamate, dibutylaspartate, N, N-dimethyl glutamate-di (2-ethyl-hexyl) ester, benzyl aminomalonate, dibutyl N-acetylglutamate, dibutyl N-acetylaspartate, dibutyl N-phenylacetylglutamate, methyl N-chloro-acetylaminomalonate, di-isopropyl-N-acetylglutamate, di- (n-propyl) N-acetylaminoadipate, alpha methylgamma-butyl-N-acetyl-glutamate, dibenzyl-alpha-N-acetylamino beta-acetoxy adipate and di(cyclohexyl) N-acetyl-beta-methylglutamate. The coating composition may also contain as solvent, di or tetrachloroethane or dioxane. The substrate may be polyester cloth, cottonrayon unwoven fabric, or poly-gamma-methyl glutamate cloth which may be precoated with polyurethane.
