[Also in Division E2] A method for the manufacture of ball joints comprises the steps of preparing a mould a for forming an outer rod 1 of a ball joint, positioning a steel ball 4, having a film A of tin, copper or lead or mixtures thereof over at least part of its surface, in the mould a so that it rests as a core in the mould, casting a charge of molten aluminium into the mould to form the outer rod 1, having a part-spherical head 5 holding the steel ball therein and having a cast aluminium alloy B of high performance as a plain bearing formed around the internal surface of the head 5 through the interaction of the film with the molten aluminium, removing the rod 1 with the steel ball 4 from the mould a, joining an inner rod 8 of the ball joint to the exposed surface of the steel ball by friction welding and swaging the head 5 from the exterior to provide a clearance 12 between the inner surface of the head 5 and the surface of the steel ball so that the steel ball having the inner rod 8 joined thereto can rotate within the head 5. In another embodiment the inner rod 8 is joined by friction welding to the steel ball 4 prior to positioning the ball in the mould. |
