Processes for post-modifying stabilized non- aqueous liquid dispersions of polymer particles, stabilized by a polymeric stabilizer which associates with the disperse particles and comprises components solvated by the liquid, to increase the stability comprise modifying chemically reactive groups provided by the stabilizer, the disperse polymer or both (a) in order to increase the specific polar interaction between polar groups in the stabilizer and complementary polar groups in the disperse phase; (b) in order to provide a supplementary mass-dependent associative force between the stabilizer and the disperse polymer by reaction with components which are per se insoluble in the continuous phase; or (c) in order to increase the stability towards a change in polarity of the continuous phase by reaction with a long-chain component of M.W. of at least 150 which is per se soluble in the continuous phase of changed polarity. The examples refer to polymers of methyl methacrylate, optionally copolymerized with glycidyl methacrylate in which (a) the stabilizer is post-modified with the phthalic acid half-ester of a monomethoxy terminated random copolymer of ethylene/propylene oxide, with a polyester obtained from phthalic anhydride and 1,4-butylene glycol or with dimethylamine; (b) the epoxy groups in an epoxy-modified polymer are post-modified with dimethylamine; or (c) the stabilizer, which is in part covalently bonded to a carboxy-modified poly(methylmethacrylate), is post-modified with a mono-methoxy terminated random copolymer of ethylene/propylene oxide. |
