An ignition device comprises a rod slidable longitudinally within a cylindrical housing, and a detachable flint, extending transversely of the housing and biased by a spring into contact with a roughened surface, e.g. having projections or threaded, at one end of the rod, so that movement of the rod by a handle at its other end, external of the housing, produces sparks, and a cylindrical part provided with a window is screwed into the housing at an oblique angle to its longitudinal axis for viewing the sparks. A pin may be inserted through, and locked in, the housing to engage in an annular groove about an inward extension of the handle to prevent movement of the rod, and rings mounted on the rod define the limits of its movement in operation. In a flare stack burner the interior of the housing is in direct communication with a by-pass channel supplied with a compressed mixture of air and gas at a reduced velocity from a main channel. The channels re-unite and pass to a distributer so that gas may be selectively passed to any one of three pilot burners about the flue stack mouth and ignited by the device. The housing is screwed into the side of the by-pass channel and interengaging parts on the by-pass channel and the part holding the flint may be provided to ensure that the flint is removed before the housing is unscrewed. In a modification, the device is disposed in the main channel and provided with a shield to reduce the local gas velocity.</p> |
