Cancerostatic azo cpds. - prepn. from mercaptopurine or mercaptoadenine. Azo cpds. of formula (I): (where R1 is an aromatic, heterocyclic or aromatic-heterocyclic gp. or salt; m is 0, 1 or 2; n is 0, 1 or 2, and X is H or an amino gp.) have cancerostatic activity and low toxicity and are useful for treating tumours. They are prepd. by reacting: R1N=N- -NHSO2- -(CH2)m-NHCO-CHnCl3-n advantageously in a weakly alkaline medium.
