PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily produce the subject compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals and an intermediate for functional materials in high yield by decarboxylating a fluorosalicylic acid in the presence of a base. SOLUTION: 3-Fluorophenol is produced by the decarboxylation reaction of (A) 4-fluorosalicylic acid in the presence of (B) a base [preferably an organic base including quinoline, trioctylamine and 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine]. The component A can be produced by reacting 2,4-difluorobenzoic acid with an alkali metal hydroxide in a solvent comprising at least one kind of a compound of the formula [A is CH2 or NR' (R' is a lower alkyl); R is a lower alkyl; W is a lower alkyl; X is H or a lower alkyl when A is CH2 and is a lower alkyl when A is NR<1> ] and a compound of the formula Y-Q-Z (Q is SO or SO2 ; Y and Z are each independently a lower alkyl). |
