A method is used for measuring the loss of large choke coils. It involves connecting a coil to be measured in a bridge circuit so that the loss is determined at a given current by balancing the bridge to obtain an arbitrary deflection of the measuring instrument. The choke is then isolated from the bridge and a standard choke, having a defined, variable loss angle is connected in its place. The bridge is then again balanced by adjusting the loss angle of the standard choke to obtain the same deflection of the measuring instrument at the same current value. The standard choke may consist of a superconducting choke having a calibrated resistor connected in series or parallel with it.
