1436783 Float glass process PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 8 June 1973 [9 June 1972 (2)] 27368/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division G1] The boundary between two bodies of different thermal emissivities, e.g. the boundary between the molten metal and glass in the float glass process is detected by the use of an elongated thermal detector mounted to receive thermal radiation from the boundary, the detector including a cooling device for removing heat from the detector at the same rate as it is received from the hot bodies. As shown the detector 20 includes an enclosure 21 surrounded by a cooling jacket 23. An elongated thermal insulator 39 is mounted in the enclosure 21 so that one major surface receives radiation through slots in the enclosure. A plurality of series connected thermocouples are positioned on the insulator 39 so that each has one junction 41 on the said major surface and the other junction is on the opposite surface. The detector 20 is mounted in the float tank by coolant pipes 31, 33.
