P-methoxybenzaldehyde, which is of use as a perfume in cosmetics and as an inter. for the medicament 'Betasin', is prepd. in high (up to 75-80%) yields from cheap and readily obtainable starting materials by oxidising p-cresol methyl ether at elevated temp. in aq. medium with a salt of persulphuric acid in the presence of a catalyst used for the liquid-phase oxidn. of org. cpds.
