The high temperature waste heat boiler has a pressurised boiler chamber enclosed by tube bank walls which carry fluid to be heated. The hot waste gases are fed into this chamber from one end and removed from the other end. The waste heat boiler is part of a reaction plant and the boiler has relatively simple design and it is safe in operation. The tube bank walls are enclosed with pressure vessel (21) walls with a gap between the vessel walls and tube banks. This gap (22) is connected to an exhaust gas auxiliary ducting which has a cooling arrangement (18). The waste gas auxiliary ducting is arranged between the waste gas supply channel and boiler (1) feeding cool gas into gap. This arrangement is used for example in reaction plants such as sulphur burning systems operating at high temperatures and high sulphur dioxide concentration.
