NEW MATERIAL:To compound SFE-1 having the following characteristics. Appearance, colorless acicular crystal; melting point, 116-120 deg.C; optical rotation, [alpha]<27> deg.D+ 12.8 deg. (C=0.22, CHCl3); molecular weight , 384 (M<+>, FD-MS); molecular formula, C27H44O (by high-resolution MS); positive to anthrone reagent and anisaldehyde reagent. USE:Carcinostatic agent. PROCESS:The body of Coscinasterias acutispina (a kind of starfish) is homogenized, and extracted successively with acetone, ether and chloroform-methanol mixture (2:1). Three extracts are mixed together, concentrated under reduced pressure, subjected to silica gel column chromatography, and developed with chloroform-hexane and methanol-chloroform. The active fraction is present in the fraction eluted with methanol-chloroform (1:9, v/v). The fraction is purified, e.g. by the preparative silica-gel column chromatography to obtain the objective carcinostatic agent, SFE-1. The agent exhibits the differentiating and inducing action from the cancer cell to the normal cell, and is absolutely free from toxicity. |
