The stabilization of dye images produced in photographic materials.

A photographic element comprising a silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith a compound having the formula <CHEM> wherein Y is -O-, -S-, -NH- or -NR1-; n is 0 or 1; each R1 independently is the residue of a phosphorus acid; each Z independently represents the atoms necessary to complete an optionally substituted benzene ring; and, X is a single bond or a linking group wherein a single atom separates the benzene rings. Use of the compound provides increased stability of the dye image obtained during photographic processing.
