<p>An industrially safe process and apparatus for altering the physical properties of asbestos to allow comparatively safe disposal of same. The process comprises receiving potentially harmful fibrous asbestos, handling said asbestos within a confined airtight space, exposing the asbestos to a temperature of at least 1250 DEG C, discharging the resultant molten asbestos and preferably quenching same. The fibrous asbestos is loaded into an induction furnace (7) and is exposed to a temperature of at least 1250 DEG C, and preferably between 1400 DEG C and 1500 DEG C for a sufficient time to fuse the fibrous asbestos into a molten asbestos. When the molten asbestos is solidified (preferably by quenching) the there formed silicate product can be used as a safe raw material (for example in the ceramic or glass industries) without the environmental problems associated with fibrous asbestos.</p> |
