DIRECT CHILL METAL CASTING APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE In the direct chill casting of a metal, a mass of the molten metal is introduced into the top of an open bottomed mold cavity having a support telescoped therein, the molten metal mass is chilled, and the mold and support are reciprocated in relation to one another axially of the cavity to form the chilled mass into an elongated body of the metal. According to the invention, a stream of pressurized gas is delivered to a point outside of the cavity, the gas is discharged into the cavity at a point on the periphery thereof, and means are interposed between the point of delivery and the point of dishcarge, externally of the cavity, to convert the stream of gas into an annulus of fluid that extends about the metallic mass at the periphery of the cavity. |
