PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an unsaturated alcohol under mild conditions in good yield by using a complex comprising a specific halogenated organic quaternary salt and a specific metal halide as a catalyst and using an inexpensive formaldehyde aqueous solution. SOLUTION: An olefin of formula II [R<1> to R<3> are each H, a (substituted) alkyl, a (substituted)alkenyl or a (substituted)aryl] is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of a complex comprising at least one kind of a halogenated organic quaternary salt selected from a specific metal halide of formula I [M is at least one kind of a metal selected from tin, gallium, indium and scandium; X1 is a halogen; (q) is same integer as atom valence of M], a halogenated quaternary ammonium salt and a halogenated quaternary phosphonium salt to provide the objective unsaturated alcohol of formula III. SnCl4 is preferably used as the metal halide. A quaternary salt type anionic exchange risen is preferably used as the halogenated organic quaternary salt. The catalyst is readily separated and recovered from the reaction solution. |
