PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an unsaturated alcohol in good yield from an inexpensive formaldehyde aqueous solution by using a catalyst composition comprising a specific metal halide and a quaternary salt type ion exchange resin. SOLUTION: An olefin of formula II [R<1> to R<3> are each H, a (substituted) alkyl, a (substituted)alkenyl or (substituted)aryl] is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising a metal halide of formula I (M is at least one kind of metal selected from a group of tin, gallium, indium and scandium; X1 is a halogen; (q) is a valence of M) and a quaternary salt type anionic exchange resin to provide the objective unsaturated alcohol of formula III. Tin (IV) chloride, tin (IV) bromide, tin (IV) iodide, gallium (III) chloride, gallium (III) bromide, etc., especially tin (IV) chloride or tin (IV) bromide is preferably used as the metal halide. The catalyst is readily separated and recovered from the reaction solution. |
