PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter of excellent durability by improving fatigue strength of a lead that is connected to a movable contact. SOLUTION: A movable contact 13 is fixed to an end portion of a plunger rod 23 via an insulating bushing 24 and electrically connected to a positive electrode brush through a lead 12. The lead 12 is a strand of a plurality of copper wires, and a lead end 12a of the lead 12 is welded or otherwise united. The lead end 12a is electrically and mechanically connected to the back face of the movable contact 13 by welding or brazing. The lead holding member holds the lead 12 near the lead end connecting portion 12a (the welded or otherwise united portion) connected to the movable contact 13. The lead holding member is sandwiched between the insulating bushing 24 and the movable contact 13. The lead holding member holds the lead 12 in such a manner as to embrace a portion (a stranded portion which has not been welded) near the connecting portion 12a of the lead 12.
