PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can easily secure positional precision of a carriage and can improve resolution without increasing the size thereof. SOLUTION: Since a first guide member 71 is a cylindrical bar-shaped member, linearity in a sub scanning direction is easily secured. A first contacting member 31 guides the carriage 20 along the first guide member 71 in the sub scanning direction. Since the first guide member 71 and a second guide member 72 are elastically clamped by the first contacting member 31 and a second contacting member 32, a roller 312 of the first contacting member 31 moves along the first guide member 71 and thereby the carriage 20 is not loose in a main scanning direction or is not inclined in the sub scanning direction. Since a driving means 50 is arranged below the first guide member 71 and the second guide member 72, driving force of the driving means 50 can be added to a central part of the carriage 20 and further limit of size of the driving means 50 or the like is relaxed.
