A CERIUM OXIDE-METAL/METALLOID OXIDE MIXTURE

A finely-divided cerium oxide-metal/metalloid oxide mixture containing pyrogenically-produced metal/metalloid oxide and 0.001 to 95 wt.% cerium oxide. The resulting mixture, having a specific surface area between 10 and 400 m2/g, is produced by mixing the pyrogenically-produced metal/metalloid oxide (having a specific surface area between 30 and 400 m2/g) with a cerium compound which is decomposable to the oxide at elevated temperature, and the cerium compound then is thermally decomposed to the oxide. The cerium oxide-metal/metalloid oxide mixture can be used as a polishing agent or as a polymer filler material.
