PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ink jet recorder which can write a character, a figure, a pattern, or the like, on the surface of a recording medium without causing any shift in the Y direction. SOLUTION: Graduations 42 of a linear encoder scale are read out for a reference length L0 in the Y direction, insusceptible to variation of ambient temperature or humidity, by means of a linear encoder sensor 30 and the length L of the linear encoder scale 40 in the Y direction is determined for that reference length L0 under current temperature and humidity. Subsequently, an elongation/contraction rateαof the linear encoder scale 40 is calculated under current temperature and humidity and traveling position of a slider 10 in the Y direction, detected by reading out the graduations 42 of the linear encoder scale by means of the linear encoder sensor 30, is corrected based on that elongation/contraction rateα. Ink is ejected from the nozzles 22 of a plurality of ink jet heads mounted on the slider 10 based on the corrected traveling position of the slider 10.
