Disclosed is an acrylic acid polymer characterized by being a star polymer having a repeating unit derived from an (a-lower alkyl)acrylate represented by the formula (I) below in an arm. Also disclosed is an acrylic acid polymer characterized by containing a repeating unit derived from a poly(a-lower alkyl)acrylate and a repeating unit derived from an (a-lower alkyl)acrylate represented by the formula (I) below. Further disclosed is a method for producing a polymer wherein oligomers having a polymerization-active terminal and consisting of more than 1.0 and not more than 4.0 monomer units in average are formed from monomers, and a living polymerization is performed using the oligomers having a polymerization-active terminal as an initiating species. (I) (In the formula, R<SUB>1</SUB> represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and R<SUB>2</SUB> represents an organic group having a polar group.)
