<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phosphor which has a high luminous efficiency and from which an unnecessary crystal phase is removed. <P>SOLUTION: The phosphor comprises Ba<SB>3</SB>MgSi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>8</SB>crystal containing Eu and Mn as a main crystal, contains >0.175 mol and ≤0.225 mol of Eu based on 1 mol of Mg and 0.050-0.125 mol of Mn, has the lattice constant (a) of the main crystal of 5.5900 Å<a≤5.5950 Å and the relations B/(A+B+C) and C/(A+B+C) of ≤0.10, respectively, when an X-ray diffraction intensity at the peak detected at 2θ=31.5° to 32° of the Ba<SB>3</SB>MgSi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>8</SB>crystal containing Eu and Mn is A, an X-ray diffraction intensity at the peak detected at 2θ=27.0° to 29.0° of the Ba<SB>2</SB>MgSi<SB>2</SB>O<SB>7</SB>crystal containing Eu and Mn is B and an X-ray diffraction intensity at the peak detected at 2θ=28.0° to 28.4° of the BaMgSiO<SB>4</SB>crystal containing Eu and Mn is C.
