The exhaust gas sensor (10) has a ceramic sensor element (12) as a part of a structure (32), with which the concentration of an exhaust component is detected. The exhaust gas sensor has another structure (36), which is equipped with water for detecting wetting of a surface of the exhaust gas sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust gas sensor.
