A method for preparing a magnetically anisotropic solid material from a rare earth- and transition metal-based alloy that is completely liquid at a temperature substantially higher than its melting point, wherein said alloy is optionally cast or moulded to give a shaped part, then solidified by uncontrolled forced or natural cooling in the presence of a continuous static magnetic field.
