Identifying individual milking animals and their position within a bail of a milking system is important for accurately associating data gathered during milking with individual animals. Known systems require extensive and expensive engineering of a milking system to allow positioning of essential components, or introduce the potential for inaccuracy by inferring identification of the bail. An identification system is provided which is relatively inexpensive to install, and provides positive identification of bail location that takes into the account the vagaries of a milking shed environment. The system includes a plurality of unique visual milking bail identifiers, each visual milking bail identifier configured to be associated with one milking bail of a plurality of milking bails in a milking system. A remote reader is configured to read the visual milking bail identifiers, wherein the reader is configured to trigger reading of one of the visual milking bail identifiers on detecting an edge of the visual milking bail identifier. The system also includes an animal identification reader configured to read the identification of a milking animal associated with the milking bail. |
