The purpose of the present invention is to provide: an image display device capable of being incorporated into a projector, HMD and the like and capable of adjusting a focus position for each region of an image; a projector incorporating this image display device; and a transmission type display device incorporating this image display device. In an image display device 180, the distribution of refractive indexes is made to vary in relation to the transmission regions of light emitted from a light modulation device 18G for each pixel in a variable refractive-index distribution panel 60G. In a projector 2 incorporating the image display device 180, the variable refractive-index distribution panel 60G is inserted immediately behind the light modulation device 18G, and thereby on a screen (an irradiated surface) of any shape, all regions thereof can be in focus. |
