An example method for managing multicast data packets in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure includes receiving an unregistered multicast data packet, identifying a first multicast filter entry in a group prefix table, the first multicast filter entry identifying a set of ports associated with the unregistered multicast data packet, determining presence of a second multicast filter entry in a flow table, the second multicast filter entry identifying a set of ports associated with the registered multicast data packet, choosing the first multicast filter entry or the second multicast filter entry as a chosen multicast filter entry based on the presence of the second multicast filter entry in the flow table, and transmitting the multicast data packet to the set of ports associated with the chosen multicast filter entry.
