A washing machine has a rotatable perforated horizontal drum which is driven at low and high speeds for washing and spin-drying by a two-speed motor 10 through a variable ratio centrifugally-operated expanding V-belt pulley drive and when the drive is in its highspeed condition an auxiliary switch in one or both leads of the low-speed motor supply is open and only closes when the drive has changed to its low speed condition. As shown, the machine tub 2 is suspended by four springs 3, 4 in a cabinet 1, dampers 5, 6 being provided to reduce vibrations. The variable ratio transmission includes the centrifugally operated expanding pulley on the motor shaft driving, through a V-belt 11, a spring controlled expander pulley 12 and which through a coaxial pulley and a belt 13 drives a pulley 14 on the drum shaft. The A.C. motor has an 8-pole capacitor start-capacitor run winding 15 and a 2-pole capacitor start winding 15 with a capacitor 17. The capacitor 17 is controlled by a centrifugal switch comprising contacts on the motor cover which are made or broken by a bush on the motor shaft moved axially in one direction by centrifugal means and returned by resilient means. The positions of belt 11 corresponding to low- and highspeed drive are indicated by dashed and dotdashed lines respectively, Fig. 3. The belt is prevented from assuming the full line position, Fig. 3, when changing from high to low speed as the motor is only energized at low speed when the drum has slowed down so that the auxiliary switch has closed. This switch may be operated by the same mechanism as operates the capacitor-start switch of the highspeed winding. Alternatively, it may be a micro switch either operated by a switch arm carrying an idler pulley engaged by the V-belt 11 during slow running or by part of spring- controlled pulley 12.</p> |
