Two transparent solid pieces of a pure phenol formaldehyde resin are provided with complementary surfaces which are joined by means of a phenolic resin adhesive. The surfaces are pressed together while the adhesive is hardened. The structure is then fired to form a vitreous carbon body. Preferably the adhesive is a liquid phenolic resin containing a catalyst. Hardening is effected by heating to 90 degrees C for 24 hours. The complementary surfaces in the resin pieces are obtained by grinding.
