1,181,159. Shells. FORSVARETS FABRIKSVERK. 3 Oct., 1967 [28 Oct., 1966], No. 44992/67. Heading F3A. A divisible shell, e.g. a mortar bomb, comprises a casing having a head 2 connected to a tail 5 by means of a breakable joint, the head having a time fuse 1 and explosive charge 9 for separating the head and tail, the head containing an ejectable body 3 connected to a parachute 4 in the tail, one or more holes 10 being provided in the casing, whereby, when the charge 9 is exploded, the expanding gases issuing from the holes impart a tilting moment to the shell and prevent the parachute being fouled by the casing parts as it unfolds. The parachute is surrounded by a two-part casing 7a, 7b and is ejected by a spring 6 when a pin 8 holding the head and tail together is sheared. The body 3 can be a flare or a unit for measuring temperature and density. |
