A vehicle safety belt buckle mechanism comprises a tongue 8 and a buckle which in use are secured to respective strap end portions 4, 9 the tongue having a flat part circular end portion 10 connected by a neck to the main portion of the tongue and the buckle having a slot 7 to receive the tongue, two stop members, pins 12, 13, for engaging the tongue adjacent the two sides respectively of the neck, the pin 13 being slidably mounted in a guide inclined to the centre line of the buckle in a direction such that, in use and pull on the tongue tends to displace the pin 13 to one end of the guide at which it most closely engages the neck, a spring 17 biassing the pin 13 to the one end and a releasing lever 14 to release the tongue from the buckle. The buckle comprises two, parallel spaced plates 2 enclosed by a casing 1, the plates being bent to lie in contact adjacent one end, and slotted to accommodate the strap 4 end portion. The plates support the pin 12 fixedly and the pin 13 movably in a guide slot 20 in each plate, the slot has an end enlargement in which the pin 13 engages when retaining the tongue. The U shaped releasing lever 14 pivots on a spindle 15 on the plates and has a web portion 18 projecting outwardly through an aperture in the casing. Lugs 25, 26 on one end of the lever engage end portions of the pin 13 projecting beyond the plates. The spring 17 is looped around a transverse pin 23 and bears against the web portion 18 and after looping around the spindle 15 bears against the tongue 8. The lugs 26 have an inclined face 27 which bear upon the pin 13 upon actuation of the releasing lever 14 and move the pin from the enlargement and press it to the other end of the slot 20 releasing the tongue which is ejected from the buckle by one end of the spring 17 in contact therewith. |
