1,145,850. Head to head olefin copolymers. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 5 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965(2)], No. 54340/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] A copolymer of ethylene and a C 3 to C 10 alphaolefin, and optionally a different C 4 to C 12 alpha olefin and/or a diolefin or polyolefin, having a viscosity measured average molecular weight of from 20,000 to 250,000, and a degree of crystallinity up to 25% when determined by X-ray diffraction patterns and differential thermal analysis and in which from 3 to 80% of the C 3 to C 10 alpha-olefin molecules are linked together in a head to head manner, are made by introducing a mixture of ethylene and the alpha-olefin into a reaction zone and polymerizing the mixture in the presence of (a) an organic diluent, (b) anhydrous hydrogen halide, and (c) a vanadium - containing catalyst soluble in the diluent together with an alkyl aluminium catalyst of the formula R m AlX n where R is a C 1 to C 12 hydrocarbonyl radical, X is Cl, Br, or I or R or hydrogen, n is an integer of 1, 2 or 3, and the sum of m + n is equal to 3. Hydrogen may be present. Exemplified copolymers are of ethylene and propylene. The Specification includes lists of suitable catalyst components. Exemplified catalysts are VoCl 3 - Et 2 AlCl-HBr, VoCl 3 -Et 2 AlCl-HCl, and VCl 4 - Et 2 AlCl-HBr. The copolymers may be mixed with oils, carbon blacks, clays, silicas, crystalline polymers and elastomers. The polymers may be cured with peroxy compounds if they contain no diolefine units, or with conventional sulphur mixes if diolefine units present. |
